Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about island travel planning, our services, and sustainable coastal journeys.

🗺 Travel Planning
How far in advance should I plan a remote island trip?+
For popular remote destinations like the Maldives outer atolls or the Seychelles, we recommend 6–9 months in advance to secure resort availability and seaplane slots. For more flexible backpacker-style island hopping in Southeast Asia, 2–3 months is often sufficient, though dry-season travel in the Philippines and Indonesia can book out 4–5 months ahead.
What's the best way to get to a remote island?+
It depends on the destination. Options include scheduled ferries (Greek islands, Croatia, Philippines), local speedboats (Maldives, Indonesia), seaplanes (Maldives, some Pacific islands), charter sailboats, and occasionally small prop aircraft. Our island guides cover access options in detail, including seasonal availability and relative costs.
What documents do I typically need for island travel?+
A valid passport is essential. Many remote island destinations sit within countries with visa-on-arrival or visa-free access for most nationalities. However, some require advance visas. Always check requirements specific to your nationality and destination. For sailing, a valid ship's papers, insurance, and skipper certification may be required.
How do I find out the best season to visit a specific island?+
Every island guide on Ion Catalyst Ridge includes a dedicated "When to Go" section with monthly weather breakdowns, monsoon season warnings, peak vs. off-season analysis, and specific activities tied to seasons (e.g., turtle nesting, whale shark visits, wildflower blooms). We update these seasonally.
🏝 Islands & Destinations
How many island destinations do you cover?+
We currently maintain active guides for over 140 island destinations across 28 countries, spanning the Pacific, Indian Ocean, Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Arctic regions. Our coverage is weighted toward destinations underserved by mainstream travel media — remote, lesser-known, and ecologically sensitive islands.
Do you cover inhabited remote islands or just resort destinations?+
We cover the full spectrum — from uninhabited atoll campsites in the Pacific to five-star overwater resort islands, and everything in between, including small indigenous fishing communities, agricultural islands, and heritage sites. Our guides for inhabited islands always include cultural etiquette sections.
Is island hopping suitable for solo travellers?+
Absolutely. Many of our most popular guides are written specifically for solo travellers. We flag safety considerations specific to solo island travel, note which ferry routes have reliable schedules for independent travellers, and identify destinations with strong solo-travel infrastructure. We also flag destinations where solo female travel requires extra preparation.

I've never sailed before. Can I still charter a boat for island hopping?+
Yes — a skippered charter (with a professional skipper on board) is perfect for beginners. The skipper handles navigation and safety while you enjoy the sailing experience. Flotilla holidays are another excellent option — you sail your own boat in convoy with a lead vessel and a support team. See our Sailing Ferries page for charter options.
Are ferry schedules reliable in remote island chains?+
It varies enormously. Greek island ferries run on tight, reliable schedules. Philippine inter-island ferries are frequent but variable in punctuality. Some Indonesian and Pacific island ferries operate "island time" and can be delayed by days. Our guides include honest assessments of ferry reliability and always recommend building buffer days into remote island itineraries.
🌿 Ion Catalyst Ridge
How do you vet resorts for sustainability credentials?+
We look for third-party certifications (Travelife, EarthCheck, Green Globe), active conservation programmes, local staff employment ratios, plastic reduction policies, and water/energy sourcing practices. We conduct regular review visits and remove properties that fail to meet our standards. We are transparent when a property is imperfect but still better than available alternatives.
Should I avoid visiting very remote or fragile ecosystems?+
Not necessarily — but you should visit with deep respect and preparation. In many cases, responsible ecotourism provides the economic incentive for local communities to protect ecosystems rather than exploit them. The key is low-impact behaviour, visiting in small groups, and directing spending toward conservation-positive operators.
